First things to learn on the Internet

With any new skill, especially on the Internet, the biggest obstacle ordinary people just like you face is the technical aspect. One of the greatest lies ever told about starting online businesses is that you need to be a programmer, or web designer to make money on the Internet.

Truth is, you only need basic skills such as registering a domain name, creating simple webpages and getting them online. Moreover, there are many affordable courses and programmes conveniently available now to teach you how to use a PC and short-cut your learning processes. There has never been a better time in history than now to kick start your very own Internet business.

As you stare at the computer screen, remember your F.A.C.E

The secret to achieving your dreams of online success lies in 4 basic elements. These 4 elements are summarised into what Ewen calls the F.A.C.E formula.

FOCUS

The first element is called Focus. In order to do anything well, you must have focus. The problem is that we become overloaded with too much information and get stuck with too many dreams that we become uncertain of what to do. So it is important to focus on a specific thing. Once you’ve indentified exactly what you want to do, you have to focus on that.

ACTION

“A” is Action. Without focus, you can’t achieve anything. But without the action to implement the focus, you cannot get any results. And consider the Universal Law as proven by Sir Isaac Newton more than 3 centuries ago; with action, comes reaction, with every cause, there is an effect. So each time you put action onto your focus, you will get results. It is a Universal Law.

COMMITMENT

“C” is commitment. As we get busier with daily tasks and are bombarded with too much information, commitment becomes a problem in 9 out of every 10 people. As such, with focus and action, you need to commit 100% to achieve your goals.

EDUCATION

If you want to advance yourself and improve on what you’ve learnt, then you need to educate yourself constantly. Education is an ongoing process, it doesn’t stop for as long as you live. There are new subjects and knowledge to learn everyday. The world’s your oyster and it’s up to you to keep educating yourself to improve skills you want to achieve.

As competition heats up, a powerful formula is not enough

As are all businesses, an Internet business is real. For most beginners, running an online business becomes nothing more than a fruitless hobby if proper systems are not set in place. To achieve real results, you need to apply a proven system to your market and combine it with the F.A.C.E formula. A system should be broken down into 5 components. These components are based on universal marketing principles that apply to whichever business you wish to do.

Component #1: Market
The first component is your Market. You need to identify a hot and profitable market; one that has disposable income. An example would be a market you have personal passion for. This becomes your “affinity market”. The best markets to look into would be your hobbies. For example, if you love Golf, then that becomes your affinity market.

Component #2: Offer
The second component is your Offer. When you have a market, it doesn’t mean you’re in business; you need to provide an offer to your market. If you don’t, then you’re in not business and you can forget about making money online. For example, if you venture into the Golf market, then your offer could be a Golf e-book. You may want to market a simple Golf e-book that teaches enthusiasts and novices how to play Golf.

Component #3: Traffic
The third component is your Traffic. You need people to visit your offer. If you don’t have traffic, you don’t have a business. And there is no way to have a transaction on the market without people and customers, so you need to send traffic to your system.

Once you have an offer, you need to send people (lots of them) who are interested in your product to your website that provides valuable information. The most successful internet entrepreneurs usually offer free information as a start. If your readers find that information useful, they can visit a section on your website to purchase an e-book.

Component #4: The Backend
The fourth component is the backend. In business, you don’t get rich from the front end. In other words, if you sell a $30 product, you’re not going to become a millionaire! The trick, that many successful entrepreneurs effectively use, is to set up a backend system. The concept of such a system is simple. After your customers make a $30 dollar purchase, you upsell or “upgrade” them to a higher-end purchase or higher-priced item.

For example, when somebody buys a $30 e-book, you could upgrade their purchase to a $300 DVD set or even a $3,000 personal coaching programme. And this is how you increase your income, this is how you generate multiple streams of income in any business.

Component #5: Duplication
The last component is Duplication. And this is the “magic key” to unlock your ability to duplicate your business and replicate an existing system to as many markets as you wish. For example, if you become successful in the Golf business and you want to start a new business in Cartoons, what you do is duplicate your existing system in the cartoon business.

You’re not going to make a killing selling a $30 e-book

But…

There are 2 actions you can take immediately to apply these principles to kick start your online business.

First, resolve today that you will be pro-active. Instead of worrying about something such as the lack of technical expertise or whether you’d be successful or not, take action to start somewhere. It could be creating a blog (you can easily create one for free at Blogger.com) or website that offers free information people might be interested in. You could even do a simple market research on Google or Yahoo to see what people are looking for online, and think about how you can create a useful product to fulfill their needs.

Second, focus your talents and energy single mindedly on the one thing that you can do that can make a greater difference than anything else. Resolve to develop the habit of single minded concentration until it is as natural to you as breathing. If research tells you it’s viable to do a business about Pets, then place focused, concentrated effort to achieve your goals in that market.

Do not divert. Keep moving forward, work smart, but still work hard and you will get ahead!

There are many ways to make money, from the traditional way of making money which is by having a job as an employee to starting your own business and be an entrepreneur. But let us talk about other ways of making money – online, and the TOP 5 ways of making money ONLINE.

You may have heard of people who makes lots of money online but may also be aware that there are also lots of Scams on the internet. There are lots of scam and you don’t want to waste your precious time and money with some systems which will not work for you.

Here are the TOP 5 ways on how to make money online

1. Answering Surveys.

One of the easiest ways of making money and the most simple, all you need is to sign up for an account and answer questions. You may not be able to make a million dollars here but it will surely be a good way to supplement your income.

2. Blogging.

Write about things that you love doing the most and NOT write about things about you. It may sound rude but that is the sad truth, most people don’t care about what you’re doing. Another tip is that, make your posts humorous or at least make them entertaining. People like it when they learn and have fun at the same time.

3. Make a website.

Make sure your website will involve a lot of people using it; a forum is the best example. It is not required to know using any programming languages, there are lots of FREE software that will help you in creating your own site. Make money with your website using Google AdSense, it is a way of putting ads on your website. Here’s basically how AdSense work, they take companies who are willing to pay for ads and put them on your site, and then you share a portion of the profit.

4. Selling Apps for iPhone/Android.

There are millions of people around the world who own either an iPhone or an android phone. And most of them download and BUY applications. Here’s what you need to do. Get an idea of an amazing app that is useful or just simply entertaining, submit it to sites like oDesk and eLance, pay them and they make your App, then SELL IT.

5. Make money with Networking Sites.

Yes, sites like facebook and twiter can be used in making tons of money. People make thousands of dollars per month with facebook on auto pilot. Basically, it’s like targeting a specific group of people who has a common interest and sell them products and receive income. With Twitter, just get tons of followers, and use sites like sponsoredtweets, where they will pay you for every tweet they ask you to tweet.

1. Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo! might be losing the search engine market share battle but they still dominate in the Question and Answers arena. People ask thousands of questions every day in almost every niche and industry you can imagine. A quick search for “Search Engine Optimization” shows over 1,300 questions that can be answered. The key to driving massive amounts of traffic from Yahoo! Answers is to give genuinely helpful answers. Instead of trying to create a blatant advertisement for your website work on becoming an authority in your industry.
This technique has the potential to send you far more than 100 visitors. When people use search engines to look for the questions you answered often times a Yahoo! Answers result will appear near the top of the search results. This will give you and your website a ton of exposure if you answer commonly asked questions!

2. Social Bookmarking

If you create content that people enjoy it can easily become popular or even go viral. The important thing is to put your website and content in front of people that are looking for it, right? Social bookmarking is a super easy way to do just that. Social bookmarking sites allow users to bookmark their favorite websites that other people can publicly view and vote up or down. If you bookmark useful content other people will find it, share it, and vote it up so others can enjoy it. Oh yeah, and it only takes about 30 seconds to bookmark your site.
The 3 most popular social bookmarking sites are Digg, Reddit, and Delicious. These 3 sites get over 8 MILLION unique visitors a month – funneling off a chunk of that traffic to your website is very doable. (There’s plenty to go around ) Just remember to create content that people will enjoy and/or find useful. The most popular content on social bookmarking sites are usually check lists, “Top 10” lists, tools & resources, and breaking news – so keep that in mind!

3. Squidoo

Squidoo is a website full of 100% user generated content that allows you to create what’s called a “lense.” A lense is a page about a specific topic that you choose to write about (usually something you’re knowledgeable in). After creating your lense other people can find it by searching for terms and keywords related to your lense. Let me just start off by saying Squidoo is an absolute powerhouse in the search engines. Its very easy to rank Squidoo lenses for competitive terms that would prove to be a challenge for websites with lesser authority. Creating a lense on Squidoo gives you 2 traffic opportunities:

When people use search engines and search for keywords related to your lense it will sometimes show up in the top search results if it’s relevant enough to the search phrase. This means you can get drones of targeted traffic to your lense from search engines that you can funnel into your website.

Squidoo has a huge community of active users that use Squidoo to find things they want to know more about. Squidoo currently gets over 9 million unique visitors a month and they’re still growing steadily. Look at Squidoo’s traffic growth over just the last year:

Creating a lense or two is one of my favorite ways to get laser targeted traffic without hours of work.

4. Guest Blogging

Guest blogging is a great way to generate free traffic – all you have to invest is the time to write an article. Get in touch with the most popular blogs in your industry and ask if they’ll let you write a guest post. Most website owners will have no objections to having other people write free content for them. If you’re having trouble finding blogs to guest post on check out www.myblogguest.com – they have a full community of bloggers that are ready and waiting for your content.

5. Forum Posting

There are community forums setup online for virtually every niche, industry, or topic you can imagine. The internet is a prime place for like minded people to talk to each other. 9 times out of 10 you can find a forum for your industry just by typing in [your industry]forum.com or searching for “[Your Industry] Forum” on Google.
Find the forums in your industry with the largest user base, start posting there and become an active community member. Most forums will allow you to leave a link to your website in your post signature, so the more you post the more traffic you get.

6. Twitter

Every time I write new content I post it to twitter. If you use the right keywords and make your tweet interesting enough you can get a lot of clickthroughs just from people searching.
For example if I write an article about SEO and Google I can tag the end of the tweet with #SEO #Google and anyone that searches for those keywords on Twitter can see my tweet about the post that I wrote. Be sure to write creative headlines for your posts so people feel the urge to click on them.

7. Facebook

Creating a Facebook fan page takes about an entire 45 seconds and is a almost a necessity at this point for every business owner. Considering that 1 in 13 people on EARTH have a Facebook account there’s really no need to explain why you should be there. Pro tip: make sure you create a fan page and not a group. Groups messages don’t show up in news feeds making it hard to get in touch with members. Making a fan page will give you a lot more exposure to not only the current members but members friends as well.

8. Blog Commenting

Commenting on blog posts written by industry experts with lots of followers can bring your website a lot of traffic. When you post a comment (most) blogs allow you to leave a link back to your site for other readers to check out – as long as you leave an insightful comment you WILL get traffic from your blog comments. Make sure you comment as quickly as possible when new blog posts go up. The higher in the comments you are the more clicks you’ll get. I have Google Reader setup to alert me when new blog posts are made on the industry blogs I follow and I comment immediately to lock in my first place spot.

9. Article Marketing

Promoting your websites by publishing articles to various article directories is by no means a new idea but still an extremely effective way to drive traffic. If you write content and publish it to websites like Ezine Articles, Article Base, and Article Dashboard website owners will pick it up and post it. This idea is similar to guest blogging except that you only have to write one piece of content that can end up on hundreds of even thousands of blogs and websites.
The same rule applies here: don’t be boring – be creative and interesting and use common keywords in your article and title so website owners can find it!

10. Link bait

The idea of “link bait” refers to creating content that is so extremely useful or entertaining it compels people to link to it. Put yourself in the shoes of your target demographic and figure out what they would enjoy or what would help them the most. Is there a tool you can make to automate some tedious process? Can you find enough data to make an interesting infographic? Is there a checklist or cheat sheet that would prove handy to your audience? The possibilities are nearly endless – survey your visitors and see what is missing or lacking in your industry and fill in the gaps.

The ability to analyze your web traffic statistics can be an invaluable tool for many reasons. But before you can make full use of this tool, you need to understand how to interpret the data.

Almost all the web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that can interpret and make full use of.
However, the data you receive from the host company can be overwhelming if you don’t understand how to apply it to your particular business and website.
Let’s start by examining the most basic data – the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

These figures are the most accurate measure of your website’s activity.
Many would assumed that the more traffic you see recorded, the better your website is doing.
But this is an inaccurate assumption.
You must actually look at the behavior of your visitors once they come to your website, so to accurately gauge the effectiveness of your site.

It is a great misconception about what is commonly known as “hits” and what is really effective, quality traffic to your site.
Hits simply refer to the number of information requests received by the server.
A hit can simply equate to the number of graphics per page, so now you will get an idea of how overblown the concept of hits can be.
Let’s take an example, if your homepage has 10 graphics on it, the server records this as 10 hits, when in reality we are only talking about a single visitor checking out a single page on your site.
As you can see, hits are not useful in analyzing your website traffic.

The truth is, the more visitors that come to your website, the more accurate your interpretation will become.
The greater the traffic is to your website, the more precise your analysis will be of overall trends in visitor behavior.
The smaller the number of visitors, the more a few anomalous visitors can distort the analysis.

The aim is to use the web traffic statistics to figure out how well your site is working for your visitors.
One way to determine this is to find out how long, on average, your visitors spend on your site.
If the time spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an underlying problem.
It would then be a challenge to find out what that problem is.

It could be that your keywords are directing the wrong type of visitors to your website;

The graphics that are used on your website are confusing or intimidating, causing the visitor to exit rapidly.

Using the knowledge of how much time visitors are spending on your site helps to pinpoint specific problems, and after you fix those problems, continue to use time spent as a gauge of how effective your fix has been.

Additionally, web traffic stats can help you determine the effectiveness areas of your website.
If you have a page that is important, but visitors are exiting it rapidly, then that page needs attention.

You could consider improving the link to this page by making the link more noticeable and enticing,

Or you could improve the look of the page or the ease that your visitors can access the necessary information.

On the other hand, if you notice that visitors are spending a lot of time on pages that are less important, you might consider moving some of your sales copy and marketing focus to that particular page.

As you can see, these statistics will reveal vital information about the effectiveness of individual pages, and visitors’ habits and motivation.
This is an essential information to any successful Internet marketing campaign.

Your website undoubtedly must have exit pages, such as a order or contact form.
This is a page you can expect your visitor to exit rapidly.
However, not every visitor to your site is able to find exactly what he or she is looking for, so statistics may show you a number of different exit pages.
This is normal unless you notice a exit trend on a particular page that is not intended as an exit page.
In the case that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your website on a page not designed for that purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to understand what the problem is.
Once you have pinpointed the potential weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the wrong page.

After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it’s time to take a look at your keywords and phrases.
Take note of particular keywords that are directing a specific type of visitor to your site.
The more targeted the visitor – meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, or fill out your contact form or make a purchase – the more valuable that keyword is.

However, if you find a large number of visitors are being misdirected – to your site by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands adjustment.
Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you.
Close analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a vital understanding of your visitor’s needs and motivations.

Finally, if you notice that users are finding your website by typing in your company name, it means you have achieved a significant level of brand recognition, and this is a sure sign of growing success.

So break open the champagne!

This post is intended to cover the basics of search engine optimization. I’ve tried to include every aspect of it but it’s possible that I missed something. If I have please leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to add anything I have missed.

What is SEO and why is it important?
SEO is an abbreviation for search engine optimization. In a nutshell SEO is about helping search engines, like Google, know what your site is about and what keywords you should rank for.

So if your website is about poodle manicures then you want your website to show up in the search results when someone searches for poodle manicures on Google.

By making small changes to your website you can dramatically increase the likelihood that you’ll show up for the search terms you desire in Google and other search engines.

Learn HTML

If you want to optimize your website for the search engines you need to take a couple hours and familiarize yourself with HTML. You don’t need to be an expert you need to understand the basics. If I talk about title tags for image tags you should know what I’m talking about.

Just search Google for HTML tutorials and you’ll find tons of free tutorials.

Blogs make it easy
If you use a blogging platform like WordPress or Blogger then much of the search engine optimization is already done for you. This saves you a lot of work and enables you to spend more time developing great content and less time writing HTML for your website.

I recommend that most everyone use a blog for their website. Without that said, it’s still a good idea to learn HTML and understand the basics.

Are You Susceptible to an SEO Scam?
Have you been tricked into forking over hundreds of dollars after being promised a top spot in the Google search engine results pages (SERPs)?

If so, you’re not alone – many online entrepreneurs, in their quest to achieve top ranking, have fallen prey to an SEO scam.

As with any industry, there are search engine optimizers who are honest, and those that aren’t.

How can you spot a fake and save your cold hard cash for other business needs?

First, get rid of your desperation.

Building your search engine optimization isn’t an overnight task and anyone promising that it’s easy is a liar – not someone who has “insider secrets.”

Aside from pie-in-the-sky speed promises, watch out for volume assurances.

If they say they’re going to submit your domain to hundreds or thousands of search engines, you’d better be asking for proof!

Submission to search engines, as any real SEO expert knows, isn’t even a part of the strategy! You have to optimize your site for ‘searchability’ and indexing, not force it on them.

Don’t let anyone guarantee you hundreds or thousands of backlinks in an instant, either!

If they do procure this many, there’s no doubt it will be from back alley virtual spots that Google and other search engines consider dirty – which can hurt your optimization!

Be willing to pay for good optimization – it’s not something a $39 monthly fee can cover.

Demand to know what your money’s paying for (specifically) and if they tout first page pledges for Google – RUN – because nobody can make that claim except Google, and good luck getting them to do that!

Search Engine Optimization and Keywords Overview
Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN have complex algorithms that decide what pages will come up in search results for a given keywords phrase. We can construct content pages with SEO (search engine optimization) in mind in order to rank high in searches, leading to higher levels of SE (Search Engine) traffic.

Of course several variables are involved in SEO, but let’s talk about what’s important to cover.

Keyword Basics

Your website is most likely about a particular topic (e.g. golf swings, poodle manicures, etc.) and so the first thing to do is determine which keywords best describe the content on your page. Try to think of phrases that are specific.

It’s important that Google’s crawler realizes that your website is about the keywords you have chosen. Google does a pretty good job of determining the topic of your site but there a few things you can do assist Google’s crawler to make sure it gets things right.

Let’s say I have a website called “All things Poodles”. My keyword list would be short, only having one keyword: Poodles

My website has 4 pages:
Poodles Home
Poodle Manicures
Poodle Puppies
Poodle Breeders

Once you have a list of keywords you need to do a little research to find out who you are competing with for each keyword.

For the keyword poodle manicure I would do a search on Google and record how many pages are competing. This tells me how many

pages have my keyword phrase with the words in any order.

Then I would do a phrase match search by searching on Google for “poodle manicure”. This tells me how many pages have the exact phrase.

Then I would do a title search by searching on Google for allintitle:poodle manicure. This tells me how many pages have my keyword phrase in their title.

Then I would do a url search by searching on Google for allinurl:poodle manicure. This tells me how many pages have my keyword phrase in their url.

Note: To learn more about allintitle, allinurl, and other useful operators:

http://www.google.com/help/operators.html

I would do the same thing for the keyword phrases: poodle puppies and poodle breeders.

My table would look something like this:

Keyword Basic Search

Phrase Search

Title Search

URL Search

poodle manicure

15,000

8

6

1

poodle puppies

145,000

333,000

24,700

3,790

poodle breeders

151,000

49,000

3,840

1,790

Looking at the table above it’s clear that there is little competition for poodle manicure and a lot more competition for poodle puppies.

Optimizing your Page

Once you have your list of keywords and know a little about your competition it’s time to optimize.

Put your main keywords that describe your site in the title tag on every page.

Home

<title>Poodles | Poodles Home</title>

Poodle Manicures

<title>Poodles | Poodle Manicures</title>

Poodle Puppies

<title>Poodles | Poodle Puppies</title>

Poodle Breeders

<title>Poodles | Poodle Breeders</title>

You want your most important keywords to appear in the title with as few other characters as possible.

Do not put your keyword in the title more than 2 or 3 times. Google sees this as keyword spamming and will rank your site lower.

On each page put your main keywords in an h1 tag.

On my Poodle Manicures page you would see:

<h1>Poodle Manicures </h1>

Please note I would not target the keyword dog on my Poodle Manicures page because there are 420 million pages related to the word dog and the vast majority of people searching for dog are not looking for Poodle manicure.

There are 15,000 pages competing for poodle manicures and only 8 pages competing for “poodle manicure”.

H1 tags are reserved for top level headlines on a page. You should only use 1 or 2 top level headlines (h1 tags) on your page.

Further discussion on h1 tags:

http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/002429.html

It’s also a good idea to use h2 and h3 tags where appropriate.

Adding an alt attribute to your image tag can help as well as having your keywords be in the file name. On my Poodle manicure page I would have:

<img src=”poodle-manicures.jpg” alt=”poodle manicures” />

Read more about images and SEO

http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/03/12/formatting-images-for-seo/

I also like to put one of my keywords at the bottom of my page. This way crawlers find my important keywords at the top of my page and at the very end of the page.

It helps to have your keyword phrase in your domain name and in the file name of your page. For my Poodle Manicures page the ideal url would be http://www.Poodles.com/PoodleManicures.html

Using Robots.txt

One simple thing you can do help to website crawlers crawl your site is have a robots.txt file. This is especially important if you have sections of your website you do not want indexed by search engines.

In addition your robots.txt file can store the location of your site’s sitemap, making it easy for crawlers to find and crawl every page on your site.

“The robots exclusion standard, also known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol or robots.txt protocol is a convention to prevent

cooperating web spiders and other web robots from accessing all or part of a website which is, otherwise, publicly viewable.” – WikiPedia robots.txt files are quite simple and easy to create.

An example robots.txt file:

User-agent: *Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /private/
Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml.gzThe first line file “User-agent: *” tells crawlers that any crawler can crawl the site.

The next 2 lines tell crawlers not to crawl anything in the tmp and private folders.

The last line tells the crawler where to find the site’s sitemap.

A robots.txt file is always found in the top level directory on your domain.

Example: http://www.example.com/robot.txt

I used to create my own robots.txt file but I recently found a site that will generate one for me for free:

http://www.mcanerin.com/EN/search-engine/robots-txt.asp

Read more about robots.txt:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robots.txt

SEO Checklist

Learn the basics of HTML
Choose your keywords
Find what other sites are competing for those keywords
Put keyword phrase in <title></title>, <h1></h1>, and <h2></h2> tags.
Include an image on the page with the file name & the alt attribute containing your keyword phrase
Make sure your keyword phrase is found at the very bottom of your page.
Embed your keyword phrase throughout your page at a rate of 1% to 2%.
Have your keyword phrase in domain and in the page’s file name.
Create your robots.txt file.

It’s real simple, all you need to do to get your blog online is to buy your domain name, your web hosting, connect them together and then install your blog.

Personal recommendation:

Buy your domain from Namecheap for $9.69/year and you can receive a 10% discount when you use the coupon code: SWITCH2NC

Buy your webhosting from HostGator for as low as $4.95/month and you can get up to 20% off if you sign for at least 2 years.

Once you have done this, login to your Namecheap account and update your nameservers with the ones HostGator gives you. After this all you need to do is the 10 second WordPress installation from your hosting CPanel.
